Fizz is Where it Iz

Hi Friends!

How is October treating you? Is it spooky? Or do you not do spooky? Whatever spooky level you do enjoy, I hope you are experiencing it today.

The loyal faithfuls to this blog may remember the Haribo Colas I paired previously. If you recall, it went pretty well. Today we have a bit of a twist on that old post: Fizzy Colas. I have never had fizzy colas and I wasn’t sure how this would play out. The red wine I paired with the other colas was a hit, so I thought I wouldn’t change it up too much. I was craving a Malbec, so I decided to go that route. More thoughts on my reasoning below!

The Wine: Gascòn, Malbec, 2011

Anybody see Gaston? No one drinks like…Gaston?

The Candy: Fizzy Cola, Haribo

IMG_2303

The Dream:

I imagined the Fizzy Colas being a little sour but with that same cola sweetness. A Malbec is strong enough that can withstand a small amount of sour. Sure, it would turn a little bit but the sweetness in the cola would pull through.

The Reality:

The wine is smooth with a tart bite and it goes down nicely. A hint of blackberry tickles the tongue.

The gummy is certainly cola but has a bit more of a bite at first. The longer it stays in your mouth, it grows really really sour. The wine is then thrown a little bit and it isn’t lovely. But as the sour sugar melts away, the cola flavor reasserts itself and the wine returns to a good, round flavor.

So enjoy! I really liked this combo and the good indication of that? A sour stomach.

Candy Corn White Chocolate M& Ms. ‘Nuff Said.

We take a slight detour from our exploration of my bag of candy from Indianapolis to check out some fall candy delicacies. Today, we explore a twist on the ever delightful candy corn. We’ve visited candy corn in the past, so I am welcoming a new twist into the fold.

So, first off, I have some saddish news. In the rush to get iOS 7 on my phone, I imported all the photos on my phone to my computer and then deleted them off my phone. In the fervor to get the latest and greatest update, I lost my photos from this pairing. Liz, you say, this is why you do your updates right away and don’t wait. To that I reply, shut up you’re not my dad, you can’t tell me what to do.

So, we will have to steal some photos from the net. But hey, not all is lost. They can take my pictures, but they can never take my words and taste buds.

I Find M&M People So Upsetting

The Wine: Viognier, The Winery at Bull Run, 2011

The Dream:

I had a taste of the Viognier at winery at Bull Run which we discussed in the winery tour post. It was light and fruity. I very much enjoyed it and thought it would pair nicely with white chocolate. I wasn’t entirely confident, but I steamed ahead anyway. I thought since the two types of sweet were different-fruity and sugary-they could potentially work together.

The result of this pairing is a really good example about how taste buds work differently in different people.

The Reality:

The wine is delightful. LIght, delicious, and fruity with a scent of tart apple and a lemony bite. The candy is also very tasty. The candy coating is fairly and it has only a hint of candy corn. The chocolate has a strong vanilla flavor.

IMG_8438

I did not like this pairing. The wine went sour after eating the M&Ms and all together the experience was way too sweet. But Sam, my boyfriend in residence, really loved this pairing and considered it a slam dunk. So I don’t know, try it and see what you think! If you can’t find Viognier, a Reisling may do the trick.

Happy Tasting! We will go back to the bag o’ candy for the next pair.

Norton Hears a Licorice

Summer is almost in our rear view folks which means a lot of fun festive pairings in our future! Today we visit an old favorite of mine, salty licorice. I have paired licorice before on this blog and licorice was the inspiration for Uncorked Unwrapped after a long night nursing a bottle of Malbec with licorice. So here we are, back with the ole muse and I must say, I certainly hit the mark this time.

So lets crack open my first delicious find from my candy haul and dive into a delicious pair.

The Wine: Norton, 2011, the Winery at Bull Run

The Candy: Salty Black Licorice Coins

I don’t know if you could actually buy anything with these

The Dream:

I have paired Norton before  but it didn’t go so well. But the rich and dynamic flavors demanded another pairing and I thought this licorice was just the ticket. It’s a nice balance of salty and licorice flavor. Both the Norton and the licorice are incredibly strong flavors that I imagined would mesh very well.

IMG_2107

Just LOOK at the color of that wine, doesn’t it just make you swooooon?

The Reality:

A home run folks!

The Norton has an interesting and complicated bouquet. The wine truly smells like a vineyard with slight aromas of dirt and grapes, but not in a bad way. There’s also a hint of sharp mustard and maybe…ketchup? The texture is smooth without any bite, although the wine is tart.  I love Nortons. Delicious!

The licorice is on the harder side and there’s a lot of chewing involved. You get a nice build up of licorice flavor in your mouth before sipping the Norton. They combine beautifully. The wine doesn’t sour and its richness fills the mouth and mingles nicely. Perhaps it is because licorice is truly such an earthy flavor. Just lovely!

What a nice way to kiss summer goodbye! We will start featuring seasonal candies soon as well as chipping away at that giant bag of candy I bought.

Gummis & Licorice & Taffy Oh My!

oh em gee readers I came across the best candy store in the Indianapolis Airport. On my way back from a business trip, I stopped in and dropped over $30. Let’s just discuss this store.

-There was a table dedicated to Hello Kitty Candy

-A wall of jelly bellys

-Now and Later

20130831-091934.jpg

-Salty Licorice

-PEZ. SO MUCH PEZ

-Gummis galore like these apple rings

20130831-092555.jpg

-A lot of throw back candy like Ring Pops

-Caramel Apple Suckers

20130831-092644.jpg

-Haribo. So much Haribo.

-Kahlua Chocolate

And so much more. I couldn’t buy everything because I only have so many hands. A little advice store? If you had baskets I would have bought so much. When it comes to candy, I don’t know restraint.

Anyway, you have some sweet days ahead readers. And my mom is giving me fancy wine!

Boozin’ at Bull Run

Hello!

Last weekend Sam & I used our Living Social deal to visit Winery at Bull Run in Virginia. This has been our second winery tour this year. This is also our second visit to a Virginia winery and so far we’re fans.

Winery at Bull Run

The winery doesn’t grow most grapes on the property, but they do grow the Norton. It is also surrounding some pretty interesting stuff if you are into Civl War history. They even have some artifacts in the tasting room, which is fun. There is also some some ruins of an old house and it has a signature of a World War I (?) soldier on the side. I should have taken notes on this signature but I was….altered.

We enjoyed the tastings! The Chardonnay had a delicious, buttery finish and we picked up another bottle of Norton, which is an unique Virginia-grown grape. Many of their whites had lovely notes of apricots.

Oh and there was some tasty hummus to have with our drinks!

AND some rad decorations

It was a lovely time and if you are in the area, head on over! I left delightfully tipsy with a handsome designated driver, what more can you ask for?

Oh! I also got some cool knick knacks to make my old wine bottles shine. That in a new post….

Had an amazing time at the winery at Bull Run in Virginia! Read all about it in my next post.

A Ruff Time

We are at the last candy in the Istanbowl Candy Bowl…the Canga bar. No, I have no idea how to say that, but it looked crunchy, chocolate-y, and caramel…y so I bought it. At the same time, it struck me as a bit boring. Is it essentially a pay day, except with more chocolate…and lumps?

Well, the “meh” attitude I had towards this candy blossomed into a “meh” pairing. But maybe you need something bland after last night’s Breaking Bad?

The Candy: Canga

The Wine: Lab, Vinho Regional Lisboa, Rosé

The Dream:

The dream was more like a sleepy thought. I thought a red would be too strong, but some dumb part of my brain thought a white was wrong. So I picked….a rosé? I mean, they are lovely and refreshing and all, don’t get me wrong…but I never had a rosé that I remembered. I thought that maybe the light sweetness would refresh the heavy chocolate.

I really can’t explain away this decision.

IMG_2016

It does photograph nice

The Reality:

The wine doesn’t really have a lot of flavor really. The wine is sweet and slightly dry but not incredibly flavorful. The Canga is indeed chocolately, nutty, and full of caramel. But it’s all too bland. All. Too. Bland. Like I said, a lot of Meh.

Tasty candy bar though.

A Little High, A Little Mal-Lo

Hello! I am bouncing back and forth between little vacations and trips so posts have been few and far between. Between work being very busy and my demanding social life (eh…marathoning Daria with my boyfriend), I’ve been a bit negligent. But here I am! I am going to Philly this weekend and I am hoping to find something fun. Philly cheesesteak…candy bar?

I bring to you a very special candy from my childhood, which I outlined in my pervious post. A mallo cup is cheap chocolate stuffed with marshmallow goo wrapped in garish, bright yellow paper. It’s a great time, please go find one, order some on Amazon, search everywhere for one. You won’t soon regeret it*.

*You might regret it

The Wine: I have no idea what that says! All the wines from WonderfulWine.Co are good but I can’t read the labels

Vaguely Christian?

The Candy: Mallo Cup, they’re gluten free!

Hello Old Friend

Hello Old Friend

The Dream:

Mallo Cups are extremely sweet so I didn’t want to overwhelm it with a sweet white. I grabbed the non-descript wine I had on my shelf from a wine deal I cashed in on sometime ago. It looked like a table red, so I played it pretty safe in this pairing. It tasted like I played it pretty safe too.

IMG_1915

The Reality:

The wine smells a bit like yeast, which isn’t the best sign. But it is tart and smooth and the yeast is not that strong. It’s genuinely pretty nice, but not stellar.

IMG_1913

The mallo cup is well…chocolate and gooey marshmallow. The chocolate isn’t super strong or rich, but the flecks of coconut flow well with the underwhelming red. I def stuffed my face and felt very, very sick afterwards. But that’s always a good sign over here at Uncorked Unwrapped n Co.

The Take Away: I regret not going bold. I think a spicy Malbec would be nice with the Mallo Cup. After all, a strange and gorgeous candy needs a suitable partner.

Please tell me if you have eaten a mallo cup below! Or whatever.

You Should Mallow Out

Posted on

When I was 12, I starred in a local community theater play. All that star power went to my head, but I kept it real by eating Mallow Cups. This marshmallow-y twist on Reese’s was always the right amount of sweet. It’ll be paired next.

P.s. I couldn’t find these in DC. I had to go to flippin Michigan!
